To monitor compliance with University policies and Fair Labor Standards Act FLSA requirements, it is imperative that the proper appointment classifications be used for graduate teaching assistants. It is the responsibility of departments that employ graduate teaching assistants to establish the appropriate job code according to teaching responsibility.

To become certified to teach, demonstrating spoken English comprehensibility through one of the four above-mentioned methods is required. It is an oral proficiency exam. All prospective international teaching assistants ITAs must achieve a score of 55 or higher in order to be certified to assume full teaching responsibilities, such as serving as the instructor of a class or leading discussion groups.

Students who score 50 will be certified with qualifications and may serve as lab assistants or tutors.

It is the policy of The University of Texas at Austin that individuals appointed as teaching assistants at UT Austin abide by the policies stated below.
