These are University-wide standards that any graduate student must meet prior to assuming one of the various instructional roles. These are meant to be University-wide minimum standards; departments may adopt additional or more stringent standards. Programs that do not use graduate students in instructional roles would not be affected by these standards. They are meant to cover the formal use of graduate teaching assistants in course instruction.

Extra help sessions and voluntary tutorials in addition to regular class meetings would not normally fall under these requirements. TAs serving as the instructor of record IOR for an undergraduate-level course need to be qualified to serve in this role prior to the start of the semester, appointed under the correct job code M , and assigned to the course in Student Central.

Students who do not meet the criteria for certification should not be appointed as a TA, serve as the instructor of record for any undergraduate-level course, or receive access to a Canvas site. Administrative responsibility for the teaching assignment rests within the department in which the student is employed as a graduate teaching assistant TA. Each department is responsible for providing orientation, training, supervision, and evaluation of its graduate student TAs, and for assigning a faculty member to work closely with the individual graduate student to assist him or her in carrying out teaching responsibilities and to facilitate professional development.

There should be a departmental orientation for TAs prior to beginning their teaching responsibilities. To monitor compliance with University policies and Fair Labor Standards Act FLSA requirements, it is imperative that the proper appointment classifications be used for graduate teaching assistants. It is the responsibility of departments that employ graduate teaching assistants to establish the appropriate job code according to teaching responsibility.

Education Support

To become certified to teach, demonstrating spoken English comprehensibility through one of the four above-mentioned methods is required. It is an oral proficiency exam. All prospective international teaching assistants ITAs must achieve a score of 55 or higher in order to be certified to assume full teaching responsibilities, such as serving as the instructor of a class or leading discussion groups.

Students who score 50 will be certified with qualifications and may serve as lab assistants or tutors.

Institute for International Teaching Assistants

It is the policy of The University of Texas at Austin that individuals appointed as teaching assistants at UT Austin abide by the policies stated below. This policy applies to all individuals appointed as teaching assistants at UT Austin. Teaching assistants are graduate students who help faculty with the conduct and delivery of courses. Teaching assistants are supervised by the course instructor of record and are subject to established departmental policies on student academic employment.

A teaching assistant holding a half-time appointment in any college or school of UT Austin will be expected to devote an average of twenty hours per week to his or her assigned duties. Appointments may not exceed twenty hours per week during the first two long-session semesters of graduate study at the University and thirty hours per week during subsequent long-session semesters.

Delta Teaching Assistant Certificate DTAC Program participants develop knowledge and skills necessary to work as an Education Assistant with K students with special physical, behavioural, or learning needs. The DTAC program prepares its graduates to support students by implementing individualized programs and activities, assisting with tracking student progress, fostering positive interactions, providing personal care, and participating in community outings.

The part-time program is offered over 10 months, through evening and Saturday classes and 6 weeks of full-time practicum experience. DTAC coordinators and instructors are experienced educational professionals or specialists in relevant fields of health care, educational technology, interpersonal communication, and behavioural support. Class size is limited. Acceptance into the program is based on a selection process completed each Spring following the application deadline.
